The Bioinformatics Postgraduate Programme is accommodated in the Department of Cell Biology and Biophysics, Faculty of Biology at the campus of the University of Athens. Information is provided herein about the available facilities and equipment, and also the libraries and academic services.

2. Infrastructure

In order to facilitate the efficience of the studies, all students are offered access to high quality technical equipment, dedicated to the needs of the Programme.

Α) Facilities

The Faculty of Biology has 2 modern classrooms available for laboratory practice (the PC room and the Bioinformatics classroom), along with modern lecture halls. An additional classroom has been set up for the needs of the Programme, equipped with appropriate hardware (personal computers connected to the Internet, UNIX servers, printers, scanners etc) that are used exclusively by students and the teaching stuff.

2 Server Machines:

  • CPU: Intel Pentium4 at 2,4 GHz
  • Memory 1 GB DDR, 266 MHz
  • Hard Disks: 36 GB ULTRA WIDE SCSI 10000rpm, 80 GB ATAPI 7200rpm 8MB cache
  • CD-RW 52x24x52

      Each postgraduate student will have for his/her personal use a P/C with the following characteristics:

      • A3 colored Inkjet, 2400*1200 dpi
      • A4 colored Inkjet, 4800*1200 dpi
      • B/W Laser, 1200*1200 dpi

      D) Other equipment:

      • Scanner A3, color, 300*600 dpi (optical)
      • Laptop (Intel P4g-2GHz, 512 Mb DD-Ram, 15 "TFT monitor)
      • Video Projector
      • Digital Video Camera
      • Photocopier

      3. Libraries

      Students have access to the Library of Biology, Pharmacy and Chemistry, as well as the rest of the libraries at the University of Athens (see http://www.lib.uoa.gr).

      Moreover, the Programme's own library includes a series of modern titles related to the subjects taught.

      4. Academic Services

      The University of Athens provides various services to the students. These include the activities of the Student's Club (foreign language courses, Greek language course, theatre, photography and painting activities etc). Furthermore, a restaurant is located in the campus, at the School of Philosophy. Transport within the campus is free; in the city of Athens, students use the public transport at a reduced cost.

      The campus offers sports facilities, that include gym, swimming pool, butt-range, tennis courts, basketball and football fields. Free training for several sports is included.

      Within the School of Sciences a bookshop and photocopy center are located.
